For this project we were to overall design a new campus and a shared space for the new school. In order to design the new school we had many prototypes for different spaces such anywhere from the parking lot to the individual classrooms. We then receive feedback from peers, parents, community members or teachers through the all school exhibition, interviews or protocols. We chose one space for our group to really elaborate on and that was the shared space. We had to make a budget and proposal to really sell it to the Board of Directors. For our final product we had to make a large poster with our Project Proposal, budget, 3D renderings of our shared space and blueprints for the whole campus.
Throughout this project my skills with making high quality 3D renderings and blueprints using SketchUp and LayOut. I had had very minimal experience in both of these programs before because of an internship in 8th grade last year but didn’t understand how to use it efficiently or professionally. As much time I spent working in these programs I began to fully understand all of the functions like in LayOut the scale measuring tool became easier to me with the more edges and spaces I measured. With both of these programs on my computer, I can use them easier to design something I am passionate about like skate parks and bike designs. I could also use my progressed skills in future school projects.
In the beginning, I was struggling a lot to work well with my group. None of us took charge, assigned roles or even worked. We were going nowhere fast. Once we realized how soon the deadlines were we started slacking less and getting work done but none of it was beautiful. The last two or three weeks my group really clicked and started picking up the slack and got everything done in time. I think that we finally started collaborating and working hard too late because a lot of the work we did was rushed and made to just make the deadline but not to sell our prototypes and designs.
I think it is very important to have the students and faculty’s ideas and input on the design of our school because they are the people who are going to be using it seven hours a day. Having a comfortable and inspiring space to learn and work in is what drives the user to make beautiful work. If you were stuck inside of a small grey box all day your mind wouldn’t have anything to build off of and elaborate into great and complex ideas. Being inspired is the first step to beautiful work. With a building that the students can make beautiful and inspiring the ideas will flow and become a reality.
